Project Details

EsPresto is responsible for different services for ZLB since 2001. This contains, for instance, the migration of the OPAC catalogues (proprietary databases) to a web integration with an adapted Open Source solution. Moreover services include the porting of running applications to new hard- and software.

According to relaunch of ZLB's website the pages were reorganized and better handling. In this context the essential objective was to select an Open Source product based on Linux for ensuring the independence of propriatory systems. After an analysis of existing pages, EsPresto gave comprehensive advising concerning the creation of a new structure. In addition to that, a new design was developed.

As a result of the detailed analysis an Open Source CMS was selected which meets the needs regarding content and technical criteria. The modifications of the CMS included the design integration, text version, an email notification system as an extension to the workflow and a link checker. EsPresto integrated the design in various special applications. The realization of that project was completed by a training of the ZLB's employees. The pages of all employees can be handled in a decentralized way. Moreover different maintainenance services were implemented, for instance, for security updates.

The Central and Regional Library Berlin (Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin - ZLB), consolidated in 1995 of the two sites Berlin City Library and America Memorial Library, is the largest public library in Germany, providing more than 3.4 million electronic and printed media. As the regional library for the capital of Berlin, ZLB is a metropolitan centre of communication and information transfer.

The ZLB offers a wide range of web services to their customers which includes a central website, several online catalogues, a popular collection of links and smaller applications such as a virtual bulletin board in the music space. Further the Central and Regional Library Berlin provides publicly accessible terminals which have to be restricted by regulations concerning the protection of youth.
